Adult Education and Literacy
Alvin Community College and Brazosport College have partnered to provide our community
members with free High School Equivalency (HSE) and English as a Second Language (ESL)
instruction. These classes are held at ACC, but taught through Brazosport College
and funded through their TWC Adult Education and Literacy Grant.
High School Equivalency (HSE)
The purpose of the High School Equivalency Program is to prepare students to pass the High School Equivalency (HSE) Exam (formerly the GED Exam).
A pre-test is required to determine if a student is eligible to take the official test, and to determine if the student needs additional preparation. Students must be at least 19 years of age to register; however, 16 year olds may enroll with a signed court order; 17 and 18 year olds may enroll with a withdrawal form from the last school attended with a parent or guardian accompanying them at registration to sign the permission form.
High School Equivalency (HSE) Test Prep courses are free to Texas residents. You must be at least 19 years of age to register. 16-year olds may enroll with a signed court order. 17 and 18-year olds may enroll with a withdrawal form from the last school attended. A parent or guardian must accompany the student at registration to sign the permission form.
Placement testing is required. If placement testing is not completed, you will be automatically withdrawn from the course.
These are grant classes and offered at no charge.
Upon completing the HSE Test Prep course, students may be eligible to apply for a Brazosport College Community Education Scholarship which could assist in paying for the HSE Exam and obtain their diploma. Must contact instructor to verify eligibility.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
English as a Second Language (ESL) offers non-English speaking adults an opportunity to develop an understanding of the spoken language of to improve existing language skills.
These courses are free for adults who wish to increase their English skills so they may have a better chance of communicating with others in the community, promote family literacy, and enhance their job prospects.
Come learn English and Civics in a supportive and fun adult learning environment. This course is designed to give adults with limited English language skills, the opportunity to practice reading, writing, and speaking English while learning about our community, government, and culture.
Placement testing is required. If placement testing is not completed, you will be automatically withdrawn from the course.
